The Lead Sheet Associations years of technical expertise have been put into this handy App so leadworkers, contractors and specifiers can access key information at the touch of a button. Drawing on the information in the LSAs Manual, it allows users to quickly find details to help with a range of technical issues, including a handy dual-purpose lap calculator for pitched roofs and cladding in varying circumstances.

Technical information

The information covers all the basics you might need and is based on the application of Rolled Lead Sheet to BS EN 12588 and conforms to the installation standard of BS 6915.

Laps and how to calculate them

Using the correct lap on a pitched roof in any given situation is paramount. Varied weather conditions and the exposure of the building concerned make getting this right essential. To help you achieve this we have included two different lap calculators, one for sheltered and moderate exposures and one for severe exposures. No longer will you need to scratch your head when deciding how long a lap should be. It also provides a function for taking a photograph of the measurement for later viewing.

This provides a handy at-a-glance general guide to check you have chosen the right code of lead for a specific purpose.

Ventilation and roof build ups

The correct ventilation for a roof is essential in ensuring it lasts as long as possible. Poor or non-existent ventilation means the longevity of lead sheet will probably not be realised. This information will help you get the roof build-up right to ensure that your project conforms to BS 6915: Design and Construction of fully supported lead sheet roof and wall coverings, BS 6229: Flat roofs with continuously supported coverings and BS 5250: Control of condensation in buildings.

Flat & pitched roofs

Flat roofs can stand the test of time but it is essential to get the thickness and size correct. Getting the codes and sizes of the lead sheet right on a pitched roof is also essential and can vary to those in other situations. Handy tables detailing both are provided.

Gutter linings

If you are using lead for gutter linings they need to be divided into separate pieces (bays) to allow for thermal movement. The size of a piece of gutter lining depends on the thickness of the lead used and a detailed table is provided.

Cladding

When specifying or installing lead cladding, the spacing of vertical joints and the overall length of individual sheets is important and a table for deciding which code to use is included.

Dormer window tops

The layout of the bays on a dormer window depend on the size of the top and whether the fall is to the front, back or sides. It also depends on whether it is a single, double or larger pieced top. Handy tables detailing both are provided.

Ledges, cornices and cappings

As Rolled Lead Sheet is highly resistant to pollution and weathering it is a fantastic material to protect exposed facades and features. The thickness of the lead used depends on the size of individual pieces and the exposure and quality of the building. This provides a handy table giving guidance on the spacing of welts in conjunction with the width and type of covering.
